Abstract
This research examined the implementation of skimming and scanning techniques in improving reading comprehension among eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Kabupaten Tangerang. Additionally, the research explored the challenges students face when using these techniques. Specifically, this research aimed to achieve two objectives: 1) to find out the implementation of teaching reading using skimming and scanning techniques in the eleventh-grade classroom at MAN 1 Kabupaten Tangerang; 2) and to find out the problems faced by students in learning skimming and scanning techniques for reading comprehension. This research adopted a qualitative approach with a case study design to investigate students' proficiency and challenges with skimming and scanning techniques. Furthermore, the study sought to understand the connection between students' reading habits, vocabulary knowledge, and decoding skills with their success in skimming and scanning. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and students’ interviews to find out the specific difficulties students face. The research was conducted at MAN 1 Kabupaten Tangerang. This research indicates that while students have a basic understanding of skimming and scanning, many struggle with applying these techniques effectively due to a lack of vocabulary, slow reading habits, and difficulties with decoding and working memory. These challenges prevent students from quickly identifying main ideas and specific details, which are crucial for efficient reading. The study suggests that enhancing vocabulary acquisition, decoding abilities, and reading speed could significantly improve students' use of skimming and scanning techniques. Moreover, targeted strategies to strengthen working memory and inferencing skills are recommended to further support students' reading comprehension.
