Abstract

Research analysis of Social Problems in Urban Slums contained in the film Fish Tank (2009). The film describes Mia, a 15-year-old teenager who lives with her mother Joanne and her brother Tyler in a slum neighborhood in Essex, England and Fish Tank (2009) displays Mia's life full of challenges and struggles to find freedom and purpose in the midst of difficulties. The author uses social problem theory and resilience theory as the main theories. Social problem theory discusses conditions in society that are considered detrimental to the general welfare that occur when there is a gap between societal expectations and reality. Resilience theory discusses the ability of individuals or groups to survive and adapt from difficult situations and challenges. The object of this research is the film Fish Tank (2009) directed by Andrea Arnold. The research data is sourced from Dailymotion which identifies social problems with data collection techniques using literature study. The results showed that social problems and resilience in the film can be found according to Soerjono Soekanto's social problem theory (2015) and Dewi's resilience theory (2020). Social problems in this film are poverty, social class disparity, dysfunctional family dynamics and gender stereotypes. Resilience in this film is independence, adaptability and hope. Andrea Arnold reflects the 2008-2009 global economic crisis in the England triggered by the collapse of the US housing market and the subprime mortgage crisis. In addition, there are several suggestions that can be offered so that readers pay attention to events that occur in film that reflect problems that occur in real life so that we know about the problem of economic crisis and resilience.
