Abstract
Most writers such as dramatist, novelist, poet, essayist, or other men of letters cannot be separated with the past. Even though, the dramatist has created new things as drama. Factually, no dramatist has perfect work and complete meaning alone, there is relation between his work and the dramatist who lives before his period. He must set, take and compare with the past, because if he does not imitate the past, he is no idea. Indeed, Shakespeare’s concept in making drama follows the dramatist before his period. Based on the background above, the research of two Shakespeare’s works has been analyzed. The research is concerned with the analysis of Shakespeare’s works. Thus, the problem can be formulated: “How did Aristotelian tragedy influence to the two of Shakespeare’s works ‘Macbeth’ and ‘King Lear’?” and “How does Shakespeare use the Aristotelian tragedy on his works?” The analysis is focused on the descriptive method, in which the sources of this research are taken from literary works. Data used are taken from the works of William Shakespeare, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘King Lear,’ and also supported by the concept of Aristotelian tragedy. Moreover, the data are analyzed through some steps: they are collecting data, interpreting data, analyzing data, and then making a generalization and conclusion. Aristotelian tragedy concept is very much taken from the concept of nature. Aristotle is naturalist, play likes nature, as his tragedy commences with the grandest characteristic in morals. However, nature refers to all aspects, the most perfect or great nature is all the complexity of form of which human nature is capable has to be united. Thus, there is a relationship between man and nature. Nature has principle individuality and egoism characteristic that refers to the fatal weakness. This is the Aristotelian tragedy concept that every player of drama has a fatal weakness character. The writer deliberately chooses two of Shakespeare’s works, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘King Lear,’ that contain the search of identity to be studied. The two works of Shakespeare indeed contain the theme of the search. Analysis of all the subjects in this paper is mentioned before, it can be concluded that Shakespeare uses the Aristotle tragedy concept on his works. Finally, the writer suggests to the reader to improve the discourse of Shakespeare and Aristotle tragedy concept for further writing.
