Abstract
ENGLISH: Mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana) contains active compounds such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, which have the potential to be used as raw materials for the production of activated carbon for adsorption, aimed at reducing the COD (7852 mg/L) and BOD (3823 mg/L) levels in tofu wastewater, which exceed the permissible limits. This study aims to identify the characteristics of activated carbon synthesized from mangosteen peel and to test its effectiveness as an adsorbent for tofu industrial wastewater. Activated carbon was produced through a carbonization process at 300°C and activated with 0.5 M KOH for 24 hours, then ground and sieved to a 120-mesh size. The adsorbent mass variations used were 2, 4, and 6 grams. The moisture content test showed a result of 0.17%, while the ash content reached 1.41%. Characterization using SEM showed open pores, categorized as mesopores, with sizes ranging from 3.4 to 14.3 µm. XRD analysis indicated an amorphous structure, while FTIR revealed the presence of typical carbon functional groups such as O-H, C=O, C-O, C=C, and C-H. The use of 6 grams of activated carbon provided the highest removal efficiency, with a COD reduction of 88% and a BOD reduction of 92%. The results of this study indicate that activated carbon from mangosteen peel is effective in reducing COD and BOD levels in tofu industrial wastewater.
