Abstract
This study explores classroom interaction categories in the reading lesson, focusing on teacher and student interaction led by the novice English teacher. This research aims to investigate the categories of teacher and student interaction, such as teacher talk, student talk, and silence or confusion, that occur in the novice teacher’s reading lesson. A qualitative approach with a case study method is utilized in this study. The data were collected through classroom observation and interview sessions in a private school in Bandung. Moreover, the Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC) System is utilized in this study. Findings indicate that there was interaction between the novice teacher and students in the reading lesson for about three meetings. Teacher talk appeared more frequently than student talk, and silence or confusion. All categories of teacher talk appeared to be both indirect and direct talk. Asking questions was a teacher talk category that the novice teacher mainly utilizes in the reading lesson. However, category 7, criticizing or justifying authority, was rarely seen. In addition, student response and initiation categories also appeared in the lesson, which concluded that all student talk categories were indicated. Furthermore, the category of silence or confusion is still indicated in both the novice teacher and students. This last category mainly happened when the stimulation of teacher talk did not get a response from students. This study concludes that the interaction in the reading lesson was interactive. Eventhough the novice teacher widely distributed teacher talk during reading lessons, student response and initiation were indicated. Silence or confusion was also found. Therefore, teachers, especially novice teachers, should manage the talk and influence students’ participation in the English classroom. Future researchers should conduct studies comparing experienced and novice teachers' English classroom interaction.
