Abstract
The use of animal hair in utilitarian products, particularly brushes, has become a critical concern due to the increasing demand for halal products in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the macroscopic and microscopic structures of animal hair and brushes as potential indicators for the identification of utilitarian products. The research utilized samples of natural hair and brushes made from pig, sheep, and goat hair, as well as synthetic brushes. The methodology included macroscopic analysis of color, shape, and texture, along with microscopic analysis of the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Observations were conducted using light microscopy and a Stemi 508 microscope to explore alternative methods for identifying the morphological structure of animal hair and brushes. The results revealed that pig hair is white to dark brown in color, with a wavy-to-straight shape and a coarse yet smooth texture. Goat and sheep hair are cream-colored, wavy, and fine in texture. Microscopically, pig hair exhibits large, widely spaced cuticles, a thick pigmented cortex, and a clearly defined medulla. Goat hair has tightly packed cuticles, a thick cortex, and a less visible medulla. Sheep hair features very tightly packed cuticles, a predominantly pigmented cortex, and a barely visible medulla. Morphometric measurements of the medullary index showed variability among the different types of hair: pig hair at 3.173, sheep hair at 5.6377, and goat hair at 5.696. The medullary index for brushes made from pig hair was 8.080, for sheep hair 3.313, and for goat hair 4.453. This study demonstrates the differences and similarities between natural hair and brushes made from animal hair. These distinctions can be utilized to ensure the authenticity and quality of brush products.
