Abstract
This study aims to identify students’ speaking skills before and after using the Shadowing Technique and to identify significant differences in improving students’ speaking skills before and after using the shadowing technique. This study applied a pre- experimental study as the quantitative method and used pretest and posttest groups. The population of this study was first-grade students at MAN 1 Tasikmalaya. Moreover, This study used a purposive sampling of 36 first-grade students at MAN 1 Tasikmalaya. The students were given a pretest to assess their speaking ability and a posttest to assess the improvement of their speaking ability after receiving treatment to develop speaking ability using the shadowing technique. The researcher calculated the t-test using SPSS version 27 to analyze statistical data. In the findings of this study, there was a significant improvement in students’ speaking skills after treatment using the shadowing technique. After evaluating the collected data, the pre-test results showed that the average score of students’ speaking ability before using the shadowing technique was 51.9, which means it is in the poor category. Furthermore, the post-test results after using the shadowing technique showed an average score of 80.9, which indicates a high category. Furthermore, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks The negative rank value is 0 and the positive rank value is 36 with an average of 18.50 and a total of 666. This shows that the shadowing technique can develop students' speaking skills significantly. In conclusion, the shadowing technique can be used as a teaching material to help students develop their speaking skills. This study recommends that teachers use shadowing as a teaching technique to help students develop their speaking skills.
