Abstract

Focuses on this research is independence woman in The In Between 2022movie, directed by Arie Posin, using Simone de Beauvoir's feminist theory. Arie Posin’s The In Between 2022 portrays the life of Tessa, a teenager with a painful past marked by loss and trauma. Tessa slowly discovers strength and independence within herself. This study employs Simone de Beauvoir's feminist theory, which emphasizes that female identity is shaped by social and cultural constructs, not by biological factors. In this discussion, the theory helps analyze the characteristics of independence and the factors that drive the main female character's independence in The In Between. The method used in this research is literary criticism, treating the film as a literary work. The literary criticism method in this study aims to analyze the film as a literary piece depicting the character’s journey toward independence. In this case, The In Between is a visual literary text containing character elements worthy of analysis through a literary approach. The findings of this study show that The In Between 2022 effectively portrays female independence through the main character, Tessa. Through the analysis of Simone de Beauvoir's feminist theory, it was found that Tessa's independence is reflected in her decisive actions and personal growth while confronting social limitations and internal challenges. The film highlights her struggle to define her identity and reject traditional roles, demonstrating resilience and empowerment. Factors such as personal ambition, social pressure, and internal conflict play a crucial role in the development of her independence.
