Abstract

Film is one of the art forms that become phenomena in modern life. The world of film, basically also a form providing information and meaning which sign as the pivot. The film is a study that is most relevant to semiotic analysis. The researcher has been analyzed the representation of the power love in Chris Buck’s Frozen as the objects of the study. The problem in this research is then formulated into two questions: What are the denotative and connotative meanings in the movie Frozen about the power of love. How does the power of love represented in the movie Frozen. The used theory of this research is Hall’s theory of representation. Hall’s theory of representation consists of “Meaning depends not only on the material quality of the sign, but also its symbolic function. It is only because a sound or image symbolize and represent something, that it can convey meaning”. The descriptive qualitative method focuses on analyzes the connotative rather than denotative meaning. The data in this research are consisting of cutting scene and cutting dialog. Technique of collecting data that identifies a number of scene and dialogue contained the sign of power of love, and steps of data analysis including 1) indentifying data, 2) Classifying data, 3) Analyzing data based on Hall’s theory, 4) Interpreting data, 5) Presenting conclusion from the data, which has been analyzed. The result of this research is divided into two discussions. First the analysis of denotative and connotative meanings in the movie about the power of love, this film shows the denotation meaning which correctly frozen as a entertainment, and the connotative meaning is about representation of the power of love represented by Anna who is struggling to realize Elsa in order to control her power. Second is representing the power of love in this movie according Hall’s theory. After analyzing movie Frozen, there can be concluded the representation of the power of love is represented by Anna’s attitude that is sacrifice for her kingdom Arendelle with showing her sincerity to her sister Elsa. Finally, the researcher suggests to the readers to improve the discourse of literature especially in semiotic realm about representation and sign to make better writing.
