Abstract
Everyone who lives in this world usually communicate with others. Language becomes a bridge in that informational exchanges. Later from this communication, he be able to give opinion about something. Talking about the opinion, some people know about the argument. It is the way to convey the opinion as the reason of the topic communication. The existence of argument is also found in speaking. When someone speaks about a certain topic, he would like to give a comment. Giving a comment can be called as expressing argument. This research wants to investigate the argument used by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in international events. Furthermore this research focuses on two research questions; 1) What kinds of appeal are applied by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his speeches in international events? 2) What interrelated components of argument are used in his speeches? The researcher limits the problems on types of appeal and interrelated components of argument. In the analysis for solving the first research question, the researcher uses theory of the types appeals proposed by Kapper (2003) and second research question from Toulmin (1958) about interrelated components of argument. A qualitative approach from Alwasilah (2009) and descriptive method proposed by Hikmat (2011) was applied in this research. The data is taken from speech writings from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in international events. There are 10 speech scripts which choosen by the researcher from several international events. The result are SBY can adapt these appeals such as Ethos, Pathos, and Logos and be able to cite the facts for proving the issue of the event. The last the researcher hopes this research can be very useful and give some additions for their knowledge about the types and interrelated components of argument in the speech. Besides it could give a lead in next research comprehensively. On the other hand, the researcher expects this research could be the positive effect in developing linguistic study, especially in understanding argument.
