Abstract
An affective strategy is a part of indirect learning strategies to increase the volume and quality of student writing. It encompasses a variety of instructional methods that have proven effective in enhancing students’ self-assurance and proficiency in writing, especially in students’ final assignments, such as writing a thesis, which is strongly tied to writing classes. This research aimed to figure out the use of affective strategies in creating a relaxed EFL writing class at the English Education Department. It also sought to find out the aspects of EFL students’ writing which develop after using the affective strategy. This research was designed as a qualitative method with a teacher’s experience approach. The research participants were lecturers of writing subjects in the English education department, which teaches writing EFL classes. Two instruments were used in this study. The first was an interview consisting of five questions, which sought to examine the use of affective strategies in creating a relaxed EFL writing class at the English Education Department. The second one is an online questionnaire (Google Form), each of which contains three statements that are more focused on the aspects of EFL students’ writing developed after using the affective strategy. The results obtained show that affective strategy to build a relaxing environment can affect the improvement of writing quality in EFL classes, particularly in terms of increased grammar comprehension, structure, and vocabulary. From these data, it can be concluded that the lecturers and writing teachers agree that the class that is touched by affection might decrease students’ anxiety, which then improves the students’ writing ability.
