Abstract

This research aims to explore the lived experiences of a final-year undergraduate student in writing a literature review for the thesis. The study seeks to understand the process, challenges, and solutions as narrated by the student, offering insights into their journey through this critical academic task. Using a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry design, data were collected through interviews and document analysis to capture and interpret the student’s personal story. This approach allowed for an in-depth exploration of how the student experienced and made sense of writing a literature review for their thesis. Findings reveal that the respondent’s narrative highlighted significant difficulties, including conceptual integration. Linguistic challenges, such as issues with grammar and vocabulary, also emerged as barriers. Additionally, the story reflected psychological pressures, including anxiety and stress, which compounded the challenges faced during the process. Despite these struggles, the respondent’s account detailed various strategies employed to overcome the obstacles. These included seeking guidance from thesis supervisors, improving time management, and leveraging technological tools and peer support. These strategies were pivotal in helping the student navigate the complexities of literature review writing and maintain progress. The research emphasizes the importance of addressing the possible unique challenges faced by students in academic writing. It offers valuable insights that can inform the development of tailored educational support and resources to enhance students’ academic writing skills in higher education contexts.
