Abstract

Literature, encompassing prose, drama, and poetry, has evolved to include novel adaptations into films, which involve creative processes that reshape the source material. Novels and films share narrative elements such as plot, characters, point of view, and setting, yet differ in their mediums of expression. Adaptation, as explained by Hutcheon (2006), involves reinterpretation and recreation, resulting in transformations of the original work to suit the cinematic medium. The adaptation process from novel to film, or ecranization, leads to reductions, additions, and modifications due to the constraints of time, audience preferences, and cinematic needs. These transformations often result in significant plot changes, as observed in Leave the World Behind, a 2023 film adaptation of Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel. This study aims to analyze the plot structure of the novel and its film adaptation and to identify the specific transformations that occurred during the adaptation process. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on the narrative transformation from the novel to the film. Data collection involves analyzing textual and visual elements of both mediums, guided by theoretical frameworks such as Freytag's Pyramid. The study reveals significant plot transformations in Leave the World Behind. The film accelerates the story’s pace by reducing introspective details, incorporates new dramatic elements to heighten tension, and alters character relationships, such as the portrayal of Ruth as a child. The novel’s emphasis on psychological tension and ambiguity contrasts with the film’s use of visual effects and direct representations to evoke suspense. Both mediums explore themes of human helplessness and crisis, yet the film employs irony through cinematic tools such as TV shows and bunkers. The adaptation of Leave the World Behind exemplifies the transformation inherent in ecranization. The film shifts the narrative focus to suit visual storytelling, offering a faster-paced, action-oriented experience while preserving the novel’s core themes of uncertainty and societal breakdown. This research contributes to comparative literature studies, emphasizing the interplay between literary and cinematic narratives.
