Abstract

Sundanese influence in English pronunciation is an issue many EFL Sundanese students face. This study aims to determine the university EFL learners' Sundanese language influence in their English speaking. It includes the influence in the pronunciation section, grammar, and the factors that caused it. This research established a case study in the sixth semester of the English Education Department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Three students were taken as participants in this study. This study gathered the data through in-depth interviews and document analysis. This study first revealed that linguistic features, phonology differences, word order, lexical influence, and cultural factors can cause language influence of Sundanese in English speaking. Then, the study found that EFL Sundanese students substituted phonetic sounds, such as /f/ with /p/, /p/ with /b/, /v/ with /b/ and /f/, and /z/ with /j/ and /s/. It also showed grammatical issues EFL Sundanese students face in English, including word order, article application, prepositional errors, and incorrect passive voice verb usage. Thus, teachers may encourage questioning to improve students' speaking abilities.
