Abstract

Questioning attitude as part of critical thinking plays a vital role in daily life. It is used to analyze and evaluate massive information that appears in this era of globalization. However, many people in Indonesia struggle dealing with fake news and easily trust in hoaxes. To prepare for a better future from hoaxes, questioning attitude as part of critical thinking skills must be taught earlier at school. It stimulates young learners to hypothesize and evaluate the discussion in the classroom. Thus, this research is aimed to explore how young learners’ questioning attitude when discussing Indonesian folklores that contain illogical storyline. This research employs a case study of qualitative method. A case study is implemented because the research intends to explore young learners’ questioning attitude toward Indonesian folklores by engaging them in constructive learning. This research obtains the data from observation and document analysis of 9 students in grade seven from Junior High School in Bandung. This research reveals that the use of Indonesian folklores in constructive learning class can develop and foster young learners’ questioning attitude. Their questioning attitude in the third meeting are more critical compared to the first meeting. In the first meeting, young learners still ask literal questions which the answers are in the story. Meanwhile, in the third meeting, they ask “why” questions to illogical storyline which the answers require class discussion. In conclusion, Indonesian folklores can be employed to teach young learners how to not easily accept uncertain information they face daily. It teaches young learners to criticize and evaluate what they read, hear, and watch. Moreover, this activity is recommended for teachers to be implemented in reading class.
