Abstract

This study focuses on how the activity of e-pal improve EFL students English writing. E-pal allows students to communicate with a native or fluent speaker of English. This situation gives students a chance to practice communication with them, and indirectly e-pal gives students real communication experience. This study aims to explore what aspects of students' English learning could be improved with the activity of e-pal and to find out students' responses toward the activity of e-pal related to their improvement of learning English. This study employed the qualitative approach. The study collected the data through two phases of data collection, which were interview and document analysis. The interview was to understand student’s responses toward digital letter activity. The documents were letters made by the student which had sent letters for over one year. The analysis referred to the assessment rubric of Brown’s postulation. The assessment aspects were grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. This study discovered that the most of the students’ improvement in English writing is vocabulary aspect but overall the aspects of writing are improved. It was because the recipients of the letters (native speakers) actively correct grammar errors from the students then the students make improvements. The students’ responses in interview showed that the activity of e-pal can improve the students’ English writing. As a result, the activity of e-pal can improve the students’ English writing.
