Abstract
This study was aimed to reveal students’ speaking ability in the public speaking program in pesantren. This research discusses one of the public speaking programs in Islamic boarding schools, namely, the speech program in Islamic boarding schools, which aims to improve students’ speaking skills and develop their confidence in public speaking. The present study used a qualitative research methodology, a descriptive qualitative design, characterized by a methodical and subjective approach aimed at clarifying and attributing significance to individuals' lived experiences. The research conducted at three students of the first grader students of senior high school at Al-Mu'awanah Islamic Boarding School in Bandung. The data were gained through video recording by document analysis. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied four steps, namely reducing the data, data condensation, displaying the data and drawing conclusion or verification. The findings were analysed through two components namely students’ speaking skill in the content and speaking skill in the delivery. The three students have equal score regarding the content of the speech that was range from good to excellent namely score 2.75. The retrieved information pertained the students’ ability in engaging the composition and content of speeches, with a specific emphasis on the students’ idea expressing as one of essential components of public speaking. Overall score was 2.33 for their ability in delivery their speech was more than good or getting closer to excellent. The students’ interest and enthusiasm regarding this program were quite high. The speaking ability of the students were quite good to excellent that they could manage the pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and accuracy.
