Abstract

ABSTRACT Nur Asyiah, 1135030198. An Analysis of Unit Shift In The Translation of Jeanne DuPrau’s Novel The City of Ember. Advisor: 1. Dr. Mahi. M. Hikmat, M.Si. 2. Ice Sariyati, S.S, M.Pd. This study aimed at investigating 1) the patterns of unit shift in the translation of Jeanne DuPrau’s Novel The City of Ember, 2) the factors that cause the unit shift in the translation of Jeanne DuPrau’s Novel The City of Ember by using Catford and Larson theories. Descriptive qualitative method applied in this research. The data of this research were taken from Jeanne DuPrau’s novel The City of Ember that was published by A Yearling Book, in 2003 and the Indonesian version that was published by Mizan Fantasi (PT Mizan Publika), in 2009. Several steps were taken in analyzing the data: identifying, considering, interpreting, summarizing. The result showed that there were three patterns of unit shift found in the translation of Jeanne DuPrau’s Novel The City of Ember, these are 22 shift morpheme to word, 25 shift word to phrase and 9 shift phrase to word. The researcher also classified the factors that cause the unit shift found in the translation of Jeanne DuPrau’s Novel The City of Ember. That was because the lexical aspect and the grammatical aspect. After analyzing the data, the researcher realizes that unit shifts can be occurred in the translation because some reasons. In this case, There were the different structure between source language and target language. English has a different tenses with indonesian, but unit shift made it equivalents because the unit shift not only transform the languages, it deliver the same message and information from source language to target language. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti 1) pola pergeseran unit dalam terjemahan novel The City of Ember, 2) faktor yang menyebabkan pergeseran unit dalam terjemahan novel The City of Ember menggunakan teori Catford dan Larson. Metode deskriptif kualitatif diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Data dari penelitian ini diambil dari novel The City of Ember karya Jeanne Duprau yang diterbitkan oleh A Yearling Book dan versi Indonesia yang diterbitkan oleh Mizan Fantasi (PT Mizan Publika) pada tahun 2009. Beberapa langkah diambil dalam menganalisis data: mengidentifikasi, mempertimbangkan, menginterpretasikan dan meringkas. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat 3 pola pergeseran unit di dalam terjemahan The City of Ember karya Jeanne DuPrau. Yaitu 22 pergeseran morfem ke kata, 25 pergeseran kata ke frasa dan 9 pergeseran frasa ke kata. Peneliti juga mengklasifikasikan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan pergeseran unit di dalam terjemahan Novel The City of Ember karya Jeanne DuPrau yaitu aspek leksikal dan aspek gramatikal. Setelah menganalisis data, peneliti menyadari bahwa pergeseran unit terjadi di dalam penerjemahan karena beberapa alasan. Pada kasus ini, ada perbedaan struktur antara Bahasa sumber dan Bahasa target. Bahasa Inggris memiliki pola berbeda dengan Bahasa Indonesia, tetapi pergeseran unit membuat menjadi sepadan karena pergeseran unit tidak hanya mengubah bahasa, tetapi mengirimkan pesan dan informasi yang sama dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa target.
