Abstract

The study is driven by the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum in Indonesia. The English textbook “Pathway to English” by Th. M. Sudarwati and Eudia Grace are used as the teaching material by several school in Indonesia. In addition, textbooks that are appropriate with the Merdeka Curriculum are needed to make learning more effective and efficient. Therefore, the study aims to analyze the textbook “Pathway to English” for Grade XI using criteria from Cunningsworth notion based on the learning outcomes of the Merdeka Curriculum. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a content analysis design. In addition, the textbook “Pathway to English” for grade XI published by Erlangga was used to obtain data. Cunningsworth notion was applied in analyzing the textbook. Cunningsworth notion has eight criteria, which are: 1) aims and approach, 2) design and organisation, 3) language content, 4) skills, 5) topics, 6) methodology, 7) teacher's book, 8) practical considerations. The result of the study shows that the textbook fulfils 82, 25% of all categories. The textbook fulfils the score of Aims and Approach (100%), Design and Organization (83%), Language content (80%), Skill (100%), Topic (92%), Methodology (83%), Teacher's book (20%), Practical consideration (100%). In addition, the material contained in the textbook is also in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum because there are argumentative texts, procedure texts, and exposition texts that eleventh grade students need to learn. In conclusion, the textbook fulfils all the criteria of Cunningsworth (1995) and is in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum. Based on the analysis results, it can be concluded that this textbook is a good textbook and it is appropriate for use by eleventh grade students.
