Abstract

Mastering paragraph writing is essential for students' writing skills, particularly in essay writing, as it plays a crucial role in structuring clear and coherent arguments. However, students often encounter challenges that can undermine the quality of their essays. This study explores students' paragraph writing skills in their essay assignments, aiming to examine their paragraph structures and identify the specific challenges they face while writing paragraphs. The qualitative approach with the case study method is used in this study. The data were collected through document analysis and interviews. This study was conducted by three five-semester students in the English Education Department of Islamic State University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The findings reveal stronger students tend to have well-developed topic sentences, logical supporting details, and clear conclusions, while weaker students struggle with coherence, cohesion, and grammar. Students face various challenges in paragraph writing, including difficulties in structuring ideas, developing supporting details, maintaining coherence, and using correct grammar and vocabulary. External factors like time management and workload also impact their writing. Despite these challenges, students employed strategies such as outlining and seeking references to improve their essays. Moreover, targeted instruction in paragraph development, linguistic accuracy, and time management are recommended to enhance students' writing skills.
