Abstract

This research is mainly aimed to know the use of English children songs to improve student’s retention of English vocabulary. There are three objectives of this research: (1) to find out the students’ retention of English vocabulary by using English children songs; (2) to find out the students’ retention of English vocabulary without using English children songs; (3) to find out the significant difference between students’ retention of English vocabulary with and without using English children songs. Thus, the hypothesis used in this research is that there is significant difference between students’ retention of English vocabulary by using English children songs and without using English children songs. This research uses quantitative method. Vocabulary test is used in this research to collect the data. This research is conducted to the seventh grade of SMP Manggala Pacet, Bandung. The sample of this research is 50 students, divided into two groups. The first group is the 7A students as the experimental group and the second group is the 7C students as the control group, both groups get different treatments and the same posttest. The result of data analysis is counted by using homogeneity test and hypothesis test using independent sample t-test by SPSS. The result of data analysis shows that the mean scores of students’ retention of English vocabulary without using English children songs is 53 and the mean scores of students’ retention of English vocabulary using English children songs is 66. Moreover, the independent sample t-test shows that tcount is 2.442 and ttable with degree of freedom of 48 and significance level of 5% is 1.677. It means that tcount is higher than ttable and the null hypothesis is rejected. It means that there is a significant difference between students’retention of English vocabulary using English children songs and without using English children songs. In conclusion, the research findings show that the use of English children songs as learning media is effective to improve students’ retention of English vocabulary because there is a significant difference of the students scores. Therefore, English children songs can be used as one of media in improving students’ retention of English vocabulary.
