Abstract

In the context of globalization, English communication skills are essential for students to compete in academic and professional environments. However, many students in madrasah still face difficulties in developing their speaking skills due to limited opportunities for real-life English use. In response to this issue, English-Speaking Day programs have been introduced as a practical approach to create an immersive English environment that encourages students to use the language more actively and confidently. The implementation of the English-Speaking Day program at madrasah is examined as a strategy to empower students’ speaking skills in English. This program is implemented every Tuesday, where students are required to use English throughout the day, both inside and outside the classroom. This research uses a qualitative approach with observation and interview methods. Observations were carried out in classroom and non-classroom environments, while interviews involved principal, teacher, and nine students. The results show that teachers actively motivate students to speak English, both through classroom instruction and interactions outside the classroom. Students show increased confidence in using English, although some still mix it with Indonesian. The school environment, such as posters and supporting media, plays a role in encouraging the use of English. However, there are challenges, such as students' consistency and spontaneity in speaking English. This research concludes that the English-Speaking Day program has a positive impact on the development of students' speaking skills. This program is effective as an initial strategy for learning English, but requires further strengthening, such as providing additional facilities and interactive activities to support the sustainability and effectiveness of the program.
