Abstract

EFL Students' perception on previewing and predicting strategies on reading narrative text This study aims to: 1) To find out the students’ perceptions on previewing and predicting strategies on reading comprehension in narrative text, 2) To identify the students’ problems of using previewing and predicting strategies on reading comprehension in narrative text. Reading comprehension is the cognitive process through which a reader creates understanding while, or after, engaging with a text by combining their existing knowledge and experiences, the information presented in the text, their personal perspective towards the text, and their immediate, remembered, or expected social interactions and communications (Cowel, 2012). The previewing and predicting strategies good for reading text because Duffy (2009:103) stated that previewing and predicting encourage students to explore for clues about the topic, consider what they already know about it, and making predictions about future events based on their prior understanding. This study employed a qualitative design. The data collected through observation, questionnaire, interview. The participants of this study were the student in tenth-grade at SMA PSDI Bandung. The study had taken one class of tenth-grade as samples and the participant are consisted of 22 students. Observation was utilized in order to observe the situation during the teaching and learning time, questionnaire was used to get the student’s perception of using previewing and predicting strategies on reading text, and interview used to provide the valid students perception on using previewing and predicting strategies on reading text. The results revealed that majority students’ perception, they have a good influence of using previewing and predicting strategy on reading comprehension in narrative text. In addition, the majority of students disagreed that they found it difficult because the text type was narrative text, less prior knowledge of the text, and disagreed that they were not interested in previewing and predicting strategy, but the majority of the students’ agreed that have difficulty because of their lack of vocabulary. In conclusion, this study desired that previewing and predicting strategy has an impact on enhancing reading comprehension on narrative text among students, particularly those learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Students who used previewing and predicting strategy can save time when reading comprehension on narrative text, and they can get an idea to better understand on the text.
