Abstract

This study analyzes cross-reference and linkage types of cohesion based on their markers and the aesthetic effects they produce in the novel Hairat Asy-Syāżilī Fī Masālik Al-Ahibbah by Muhammad Jibril. The novel narrates the journey of Imam Abu Hasan Asy-Syadzili in seeking the true meaning of love his god. The aim of this research is to identify the cross-reference and linkage types of cohesion based on their markers and to interpret the aesthetic effects they create in the novel Hairat Asy-Syāżilī Fī Masālik Al-Ahibbah by Muhammad Jibril. This qualitative research employs observation and note-taking techniques for data collection. Data analysis utilizes the distributional method with the basic technique of immediate constituent analysis (ICA) and a stylistic approach presented descriptively. The results of the study show that the novel contains cross-reference cohesion marked by reference markers, substitution, ellipsis, formal repetition, and elegant variations. The linkage cohesion is characterized by markers of conjunction words. Additionaly, it also includes the aesthetic effect caused by the use of each cohesion marker.
