Abstract
Listening comprehension is a critical skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), yet it presents numerous difficulties for students, particularly in Indonesian high schools. Listening comprehension requires students to process spoken language in real time, which involves not only understanding words and sentences but also interpreting meaning within a broader cultural and contextual framework. Teachers need to assist them, as they play a pivotal role in addressing these difficulties by employing various adaptive teaching strategies suited to students' diverse needs and learning levels. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data were collected through three data collection techniques: (1) a questionnaire to identify listening comprehension difficulties faced by 11th-grade students at SMAN 24 Bandung, (2) observation to explore the strategies experienced teachers employ to address these difficulties, and (3) interviews to reveal the perceptions of both teachers and students regarding these difficulties and strategies. The findings of this study reveal that students face difficulties related to cultural differences, poor audio quality, limited vocabulary, the length and speed of listening texts, physical conditions, and lack of concentration. Teachers employed various strategies to address these difficulties, including pre-listening preparation, repetition, socio-affective strategies, and interactive tasks, ensuring differentiated learning based on students' proficiency levels. To overcome these challenges, students also employed strategies such as note-taking, summarizing, and collaborative learning. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of teachers employing various and suited strategies to enhance students' listening comprehension. On the other hand, students also need to apply their own strategies and become more familiar with listening activities to develop individual listening skills.
