Abstract

Figurative language or stylistic language is an evocative language style used to enhance effect by presenting and comparing a particular object or material or generally alluding to something else. Figurative language adds visual interest to the text by enhancing it with personification, simile, metaphor and other techniques. This was the trigger the research was employed to analyze the types of figurative language and how this figurative language created the emotional depth in the song lyrics of the album A Beautiful Blur by LANY. This research used descriptive qualitative method with the main theory from Reaske (1996) related to figurative language and emotional depth. Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that there were figurative languages such as 35 metaphors, 19 hyperboles, 8 symbolism, 7 ironies, 6 repetitions, 5 paradoxes, 3 parallelism, 2 allusions, 1 antithesis, 1 simile, 1 metonymy. From the findings, metaphor was the most dominant type of the figurative language used. The abundant use of metaphors showed that LANY utilized this language style to describe feelings more deeply and expressively. Meanwhile, the figurative language created the emotional depth in the song lyrics was by using the melancholic and reflective diction, which reinforced themes such as the end of love, self-discovery, and the process of healing from emotional wounds. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of figurative language in the song lyrics of the album A Beautiful Blur by LANY had functions not only as an aesthetic element, but also as a means to convey deep emotional depth. Hence, the use of metaphor, irony, symbolism, etc. in the song lyrics allows the listener to provide a broader interpretation of their meaning and to feel a stronger emotional experience.
