Abstract

This paper critically examines the use of political satire in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, focusing on how the film ingeniously employs humour, irony, and absurdity to critique Nazi ideology and fascist indoctrination. Through a detailed textual analysis of narrative techniques, visual elements, and dialogue, this study investigates how the film’s satirical approach dismantles authoritarian power structures. It does so by portraying Hitler as a preposterous imaginary friend and by presenting Nazi propaganda through the naive perspective of a 10-year-old protagonist. These elements are dissected using the theories of Dennis W. Petrie and Joseph M. Boggs on film analysis and Northrop Frye on irony and satire, which includes political satire. The method used in this research is qualitative research. A total of 98 data points were discovered in this study, with 71 data points being included. The findings demonstrate that Jojo Rabbit effectively uses satire to challenge fascist ideology while conveying an anti-war message, transforming historical trauma into a tool for critical reflection. This research enriches our understanding of the role of satire in contemporary cinema as both entertainment and social commentary, highlighting its unique power to address sensitive political issues through comedy
