Abstract

This research aims to analyze how Western elements are represented in Rango (2011) and also to find out how Rango's characterization as the protagonist can help create Western elements in this film. The reason why the researcher focuses on finding these two points is to prove that Rango (2011) is actually a contemporary western film. In order to find the data contained in Rango (2011), the researcher uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. This type of method is very suitable for analyzing films because qualitative methods allow researchers to conduct in-depth analysis of the symbols, themes and narratives contained in Rango (2011). In addition, the descriptive approach can also make it easier for the researcher to explain the visual and narrative details in this film. To analyze the Western elements contained in Rango (2011), the researcher uses the Western formula theory by Wyatt & Saricks in the book The Reader Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction, Third Edition (2019). Furthermore, to analyze the characterization of Rango, the researcher uses the characterization theory of Petrie & Boggs in the book The Art of Watching Film, Ninth Edition (2018). The results of this research prove that Rango (2011) adopts various classic Western conventions ranging from landscape to archetype Western hero. However, the reason why Rango (2011) can be considered as a contemporary Western is because this film also directly and openly deconstructs and modifies these Western elements in order to create a more modern and relevant narrative. In addition, Rango (2011) also explores the theme of inner conflict and the search for identity in order to raise social problems and issues that occur in the modern era, so that this film can present a deeper story for the audience. Therefore, Rango (2011) is a contemporary Western film that focuses to deconstructs the classic Western conventions and challenges the old myths contained in the Western genre.
