Abstract

This study aims to compare the depiction of modern slavery and character changes in the novels Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson and Sapaan Sang Giri by Isna Marifa. This study uses a comparative literary analysis approach to examine the data that has been collected. The data analyzed are in the form of narratives and dialogues from both novels written in different languages, namely English and Indonesian. The analysis in this study is based on Clegg's Modern Slavery Theory, supported by Marxist Theory as discussed in Rosemarie Tong's book Feminist Thought. The results of this study indicate that: (1) There is data that indicates similarities in the forms of modern slavery depicted in both novels, such as human trafficking, forced labor, sexual slavery, and exploitation of child labor. These four forms of modern slavery equally reflect dehumanization, oppression, and limited freedom for the characters. (2) There is data that shows changes in the main characters in both novels.
