Abstract

Memes contain entertaining social messages, parodies, and satire. Specifically those posted on the Sarcasm Society Facebook page, that reflect societal issues. Therefore, memes have become an intermediary for communication. The research applies Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory to analyze the signs (signified and signifier) and meanings embedded in memes, studying how verbal and non-verbal elements in these memes convey deeper social messages related to common grievances and challenges. The primary objectives of this research are: 1) To find out signifier and signified represented in The Memes posted by Sarcasm Society Facebook page, and 2) To analyze how the memes were posted by Sarcasm Society Facebook page can represent social problem. The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative, following Creswell’s (2013) approach, which emphasizes the incorporation of participant voices, researcher reflexivity, and descriptive interpretations of the research problem. The research concludes that the signified and signifier meaning from the memes are an effective medium for reflecting and critiquing social and cultural norms. The analysis identified that memes address various social issues such as psychological, biological, cultural, and economic factors, aligning with Seokanto's (2003) theory of social problems. Of the fifteen memes analyzed, nine represent cultural factors, seven represent psychological factors, two represent economic factors, and one represents a biological factor.
