Abstract

Based on the finding that previous studies on postmodernism in popular literature tend to focus on socio-cultural critique, racial issues, or dystopian representations, this research examines the postmodern elements in the film Catch Me If You Can (2002) directed by Steven Spielberg, with a focus on narrative structure and mise-en-scène. Drawing on the theories of Jean-François Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard, and Fredric Jameson, this study discusses how the film integrates key characteristics of postmodernism, including the rejection of grand narratives, hyperreality, and pastiche. The study also analyzes the film through the lens of the postmodern detective formula, which deconstructs the traditional detective narrative by emphasizing unconventional narrative structure and moral ambiguity. The findings show that the film blurs the boundaries between truth and fiction, presents an illusion of an "ideal" reality, and challenges the conventions of the detective genre. By incorporating these postmodern elements, Catch Me If You Can serves as an example of how contemporary cinema reshapes historical and cultural narratives, making it a significant object of study in postmodern film analysis.
