Abstract

This study explores the character development of the protagonist, Misfortune, in the story-driven video game Little Misfortune, focusing on her emotional and psychological growth throughout the narrative. By analyzing key elements such as the game’s narrative structure, the role of player agency, and the thematic exploration of innocence and naivety, the research examines how the interactive nature of video games influences character development. Misfortune, a young child with a limited understanding of the world, is guided by a mysterious narrator, Mr. Voice, and interacts with the world around her in ways that highlight her innocence and vulnerability. The player’s choices shape Misfortune’s responses to challenges, allowing her to either preserve or shed her naivety as the story progresses. This paper argues that Little Misfortune uses the interactive format to convey a deep emotional journey, with Misfortune’s evolution reflecting broader themes of childhood maturation, resilience, and the loss of innocence. Through a detailed analysis of narrative elements, character interactions, and visual symbolism, the study demonstrates how video game storytelling provides a unique platform for emotional engagement and character exploration. The findings contribute to understanding how video games can be an effective medium for narrative-driven character development and offer insights into the emotional complexity that can be achieved through interactive storytelling. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengembangan karakter protagonis, Misfortune, dalam permainan video berbasis cerita Little Misfortune, dengan fokus pada pertumbuhan emosional dan psikologisnya sepanjang narasi. Dengan menganalisis elemen-elemen kunci seperti struktur naratif permainan, peran agensi pemain, dan eksplorasi tematik tentang kepolosan dan kebodohan, penelitian ini memeriksa bagaimana sifat interaktif dari permainan video mempengaruhi pengembangan karakter. Misfortune, seorang anak muda dengan pemahaman terbatas tentang dunia, dibimbing oleh narator misterius, Mr. Voice, dan berinteraksi dengan dunia di sekitarnya dengan cara yang menyoroti kepolosan dan kerentanannya. Pilihan pemain membentuk respons Misfortune terhadap tantangan, memungkinkan dia untuk mempertahankan atau melepaskan kebodohannya seiring berjalannya cerita. Artikel ini berpendapat bahwa Little Misfortune menggunakan format interaktif untuk menyampaikan perjalanan emosional yang mendalam, dengan evolusi Misfortune yang mencerminkan tema-tema yang lebih luas tentang pematangan masa kanak-kanak, ketahanan, dan kehilangan kepolosan. Melalui analisis mendalam terhadap elemen naratif, interaksi karakter, dan simbolisme visual, penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana penceritaan dalam permainan video menyediakan platform unik untuk keterlibatan emosional dan eksplorasi karakter. Temuan ini berkontribusi pada pemahaman bagaimana permainan video dapat menjadi media yang efektif untuk pengembangan karakter berbasis narasi dan memberikan wawasan tentang kompleksitas emosional yang dapat dicapai melalui penceritaan interaktif.
