Abstract

Language is the important and an influential thing in human life because language is used for daily conversation. It allows people to say something what they want and also to express what their means. In every language in the world has a Grammar. Grammar helps us to focus on the rules that words play in a sentence or phrase. The most essential part of speech in any sentence is the verb. Without a verb, we cannot have a complete sentence. A verb is a single word, or a group of words, that describe an action or state. Marcella Frank (1972:47) argued that verb is the complex part of speech. the cases of grammar especially about verb are found in various object, such as in literature, movies, even in novel. One of novels that found many cases of verb is Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Sea Of Monsters’s novel by Rick Riordan. Thereby, there are some questions in this research, they are: 1) What categories of verb are used in Percy jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters’s Novel? 2) What are the functions of those verbs in Percy jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters’s Novel? The researcher uses Marcella Frank’s theory about the categories and functions of the verbs used in the novel. Besides that, to support the findings about the categories and the function of those verbs, the researcher used Frank’s and Pyle’s theories to focusing on categorizing. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This method used by identifying the categorizations of verbs and describe the function of those verbs used in the novel. The data of this research are taken from Rick Riordan’s Novel Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters. The researcher then collected, analyzed, and discussed the data. The results shows that 50 verbs are found in this novel and then classified into 3 categories: Transitive Verbs (40 verbs), Intransitive Verbs (8 verbs) and Phrasal Verbs (2 verbs). The researcher also describes the functions of those verbs. The verbs is show an action, the occurence of an event, or the presence of a condition, and they also can show a change in time by a change in the verb themselves: now or then.
