Abstract
This research is intended to identify the types of flouting maxims contained in the podcast "You Can't Make This Up" and how the flouting maxims are used to create negative politeness strategies. The researcher used the Cooperation Principle by Grice (2004) to identify the types of flouting maxims, and the Politeness Theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) to analyze the use of negative politeness strategies created from flouting maxim. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with data taken from conversations between the host and guests in the podcast. The findings revealed that various types of flouting maxims appeared in the conversations, namely the flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relation, and flouting maxim of manner. Notably, the maxim of quantity was the most frequently flouted in the podcast. The analysis also indicated that these flouting maxims contributed to seven types of negative politeness strategies, namely being conventionally indirect, hedging, being pessimistic, minimizing imposition, giving deference, impersonalizing the speaker and the hearer, and stating the face-threatening act (FTA) as a general rule. These strategies were often used when speakers aimed to maintain politeness while addressing sensitive topics. The dominant negative politeness strategy identified in the podcast was hedging. These findings suggested that the intentional flouting of maxims served as a pragmatic strategy to soften face-threatening acts, preserve politeness, and create a respectful and engaging conversational atmosphere within the podcast.
