Abstract
Discourse deixis is a linguistic feature that refers to specific segments within a discourse, thereby supporting textual organization and coherence. This study investigates the types and functions of discourse deixis and analyzes how these linguistic elements contribute to the construction of power within diplomatic communication. It examines two official speeches delivered by Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, at the 2024 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Public Hearing. The analysis is grounded in Levinson’s (1983) theory of discourse deixis and Van Dijk’s (2008, 2009) framework on discourse and power, employing a descriptive qualitative approach. A total of 105 deixis-related units are identified from the speech transcripts, with 59 selected for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that demonstrative pronouns—particularly “this” and “that”—are the most frequently used, each occurring 42 times, followed by 16 instances of referential deixis. Functionally, anaphoric deixis dominates with 95 instances, while cataphoric deixis appears 10 times. The results indicate that the strategic use of deixis not only facilitates clarity and cohesion in the discourse but also reinforces the speaker’s authority, strengthens argumentative structure, and supports Indonesia’s diplomatic stance. Overall, the study demonstrates that discourse deixis serves a dual role as both a cohesive linguistic tool and a rhetorical device for constructing power in international forums.
