Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and utilization of Red Herring in Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None, as well as its role within the narrative structure. Red Herring is frequently employed in various contexts such as war, politics, economics, and literature. This research adopts the foundational theory proposed by Sisler II (2021), who defined Red Herring as a technique used to mislead and create false clues that divert readers from the actual truth. The study also refers to several previous works that discuss the forms and applications of Red Herring in literary texts. To address the research question regarding the role of Red Herring in narrative structure, the study applies the narrative structure theory of Tzvetan Todorov (1969), which divided a story into five stages: equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method to identify the forms and analyze the utilization of Red Herring, as well as to explain its role within the novel’s narrative structure. The findings reveal four categories of Red Herring forms: character-based, object-based, linguistic elements, and coincidental, with a total of 17 data analyzed.
