Abstract

This research examines Bassem Youssef's utterances in his exclusive interview about the Israel-Hamas War 2023 with Piers Morgan on the Piers Morgan Uncensored Talkshow. There are two aims of this research: the first is to distinguish the kind of forms of assertive illocutionary acts uttered by Bassem Youssef, and the second is to examine the function of each form of assertive illocutionary act used by Bassem Youssef to convey meaning and intention related to the Israel-Hamas War 2023. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. The data source for this research was taken from Bassem Youssef's utterances in his interview with Piers Morgan on the Piers Morgan Uncensored Talkshow, and the video was uploaded on the official YouTube channel on November 2, 2023. The transcribed utterances were categorised based on the forms of assertive illocutionary acts, then examined to determine their function, and concluded. The researcher uses Searle's theory (1979) to examine the forms of assertive illocutionary acts and their functions. The results of the research show that based on 62 data assertives there were 18 data of the act of stating, which indicated that Bassem was completely committed to the truth of the statement he made. A total of 15 utterances were the act of explaining, which indicated that Bassem wanted the audiences to know comprehensively about the Israel-Hamas war. Then, there 13 data were the act of asserting, which showed that Bassem emphasize to his audiences everything he perceived as a fact. Furthermore, 11 utterances were the act of giving an opinion, which showed that Bassem had a personal perspective on the Israel-Hamas war. Therefore, 3 utterances were the act of claiming, indicating that Bassem conveyed the truth of something with evidence that is established as a fact, which is arguable. The last 2 utterances were the act of complaining and indicating his dissatisfaction and frustration.
