Abstract

This research aims to find out the students’ perception and students’ achievement toward the method of learning speaking by reciting descriptive text. Recitation is the act of repeating what has already been uttered according to ((Jake), 2010) has been stated. This method was chosen because it allows students’ to practice their English speaking ability. According to the background of this study the problem of this research formulated into two question. The first question is what are the students’ perception toward the method of learning speaking by reciting descriptive text?, and the second one is what are the students’ perception about their achievement toward learning speaking by reciting descriptive text?. This research use a qualitative method with a case study design to explore the students’ perception toward learning speaking by reciting descriptive text. One class consist of 30 students from 10th grade at SMAN 1 Jatinangor. Learning session divided into two session. This study uses 16 students’ as participants to collect research data. This research found out that students’ have a positive perception toward the using of recitation method when learning English speaking, the ease of recitation method itself students’ feel at ease when using the method. Also the use of recitation method with descriptive text give a good achievement to students’ because there an improvement of students’ speaking ability. In conclusion, although the recitation method is an old method, the effectiveness in aiding the development of students’ English skills can be calculated nowadays. Another suggestion for future researcher in to explore other methods that would be suitable for learning speaking.
