Abstract

The central objective of this research is to investigate whether the application of Effective Teacher's Role-Playing Strategies leads to a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking abilities. This inquiry adopts a pre-experimental design with a quantitative methodology, utilizing both pre-test and post-test formats to assess learners’ performance. The participants comprised 29 eighth-grade students enrolled at SMP Mekar Arum Bandung. Initially, these students underwent a pre-test designed to evaluate their baseline speaking proficiency. Following this, they participated in a learning intervention centered on the use of role-playing techniques facilitated by the teacher. Upon completion of the intervention, a post-test was administered to measure any progress in their speaking capabilities. For the purpose of statistical analysis, the researcher employed SPSS version 20. The data revealed a notable shift in performance between the two testing phases. Specifically, the mean score on the pre-test was 314.00, with an average of 10.827 and a standard deviation of 2.330, categorizing students’ speaking skills at a low level. After implementing the role-playing strategy, the post-test scores exhibited a substantial increase, with a mean of 419.00, an average score of 14.448, and a standard deviation of 2.384—placing them in a high-performance category. To determine the significance of this improvement, a paired sample t-test was conducted. The test yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.00, which is well below the conventional threshold of 0.05. This statistical result leads to the rejection of the null hypothesis and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis, thereby indicating a meaningful effect. In summary, the findings suggest that incorporating effective teacher-led role-playing strategies into the classroom can serve as a valuable pedagogical approach to enhance students’ speaking skills.
