Abstract

Some English handbooks do not match with students’ need so it will influence their English skill. Because a handbook is likely to be a teacher’s teacher (McCrimmon, 1941), so analyzing handbook towards students’ need is a must. This research focuses on analyzing English handbook towards Muamalah students’ need in learning ESP. The objectives of this research is to know; (1) The research result of evaluating Muamalah students’ needs in learning English, (2) The relevance or suitability of the English Handbook with the students’ needs. The students’ need is divided into two categories, the first is students’ need in life and students’ need in academic (suitable with curriculum). The research was conducted at the State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung at Muamalah Department of the Faculty of Syariah and Law. The students are at second semester. They are 21 students from 3 classes (7 students from each class). The research is qualitative research, so it does not serve any statistical data. The researcher collects the data of the research from questionnaire, documents and interview. The findings of this research are; the students’ needs are speaking and listening in learning English and the curriculum of the Faculty of Syariah and Law is grammar review. While the English Handbook provides speaking, writing and reading activity without any listening activity. So the English Handbook is suitable for the students’ need in listening and it is not suitable to the English curriculum of the Faculty of Syariah and Law. From the result of the research, the researcher suggests that the book can be evaluated and add grammar review for Muamalah students in order to improve English proficiency of the students and also the book will be suitable with the students’ needs and the curriculum of the Faculty of Syariah and Law.
