Abstract
Teaching vocabulary in certain level of formal education is seen as passive process, especially using conventional method. It makes students get bored easily in learning process. In fact, many students consider that learning English vocabulary is difficult and boring activity. Therefore, it needs an interesting and appropriate media in teaching English vocabulary in class rooms. One of appropriate media in teaching vocabulary is macromedia flash. Macromedia Flash can atract student’s attention to focus more in learning. Thus, it can motivate students’ active participation, students’ interest, students’ enjoyment in English learning. This reserach focuses on using macromedia flash in improving students’ vocabulary ability. It is aimed: a) to find out the students’ ability in vocabulary through using macromedia flash; b) to find out the the students’ ability in vocabulary without using macromedia flash; c) to identity the influence of students’ ability in vocabulary by using macromedia flash. It is used a quantitative method in the form of quasi-experimental research design with three research techniques: pre-test, treatment and post-test. Furthermore, there are two selected classes; experimental class and control class. The research takes place at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Cibiru Bandung. The result of research data analysis shows that the mean score of experimental class in pre-test is 40,40 and the mean score of post-test is 66, 35. Furthermore, the N-Gain of experimental class is 0,43 with medium interpretation while the mean score of control group in pre-test is 35,82 and the mean score of post-test is 60,97. In addition N-Gain of control class is 0,37 with low interpretation.This research finds significant influence between students’ vocabulary ability in experimental class that using macromedia flash and control class that using conventional method as concluded by the result of testing hypothesis. The testing hypothesis shows that is 2,16 while is 1,67. It means that is higher than . Then, based on the statistical value if, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that teaching English vocabulary by using macromedia flash more effective than using conventional method. Finally, it is suggested that using macromedia flash is recommended to be implemented in teaching English vocabulary. Teachers should be creative and innovative in developing kinds of media in teaching learning process in order to create condusive class atmosphere for students in learning English. On the other hand, students are also encouraged to use Macromedia as their entertainment in their spare time. All of these can be realised when schools provide this media as teaching and learning facility for their teachers and students.
