Abstract

Women’s resistance is a form of women’s effort to fight against various injustices, discrimination, and oppression. The uniqueness of women’s resistance lies in its role as a symbol of social change, in boosting self-confidence, and in building solidarity among women. This becomes the trigger of the research, with the aim of analyzing the forms and impacts of women’s resistance to the patriarchal system in Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. The focus of this research is on a deeper exploration of the meaning of the research object, which serves as the main motivation for the reseacher to further examine how women’s resistance is portrayed in a complex way in the literary work. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method and applies the main theory from Wollstonecraft’s (1792) feminism in her work. Based on the data analysis, the research findings show that there are five main forms of women’s resistance: equality in education between men and women, women are rational beings, criticism of passive feminism, criticism of patriarchal marriage, and rejection of dependence on men. Meanwhile, the impacts of women’s resistance to the patriarchal system are classified into two major outcomes: giving a better life to thers and inspiring women. These two impacts not only reflect the life changes of the main characters, but also demonstrate how a single act of resistance brings broad influence to the surrounding social environment women’s resistance to the patriarchal system is highly relevant, not only in the era in which the novel is set, but also in the lives of women today. Therefore, discussions about women’s resistance remain essential not only as a reflection of a history of oppression but also as a motivation to continue building collective awareness that change can begin, even from the smallest voice.
