Abstract

The research aims to (1) identify the kind of cognitive dimensions presented in listening instructions in the English textbook entitled "Pathway to English" English Textbook for Senior High School Grade XII; and (2) to analyze the cognitive levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, including both lower-order thinking skills (LOTS) and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) represented in listening instructions in the English textbook entitled "Pathway to English" English Textbook for Senior High School Grade XII. This research used qualitative approach where data was collected through document analysis and interpretive analysis. The document that was analyzed is the grade XII English Textbook published by Erlangga. The study was utilized with Bloom’s taxonomy (2001) revised to identify the cognitive domain and analyze LOTS and HOTS in the listening instructions from the grade XII English Textbook. The research findings show that the distribution of listening instructions in "Pathway to English" contained LOTS item exercises cover 40.82% of C1 (Remembering), 24.49% of C2 (Understanding), and 22.45% of C3 (Applying). On the other hand, HOTS of listening instruction are presented in the textbook, which cover 8.16% of C4 (Analyzing), 2.04% of C5 (Evaluating), and 2.04% of C6 (Creating). In addition, it is found that the listening instructions in the textbook are more dominated by LOTS (C1, C2, and C3) than HOTS (C4, C5, and C6). All of them are distributed with various percentages, with 87.76% of LOTS dominated by C1 (Remember) and 12.24% of HOTS dominated by C4 (Analyzing). Based on the result, the conclusion of this research contains all levels of cognitive dimensions in Bloom's Taxonomy (2001). In the listening instruction, which has three sections on each skill, such as pre-listening, whilst-listening and post-listening of the English Textbook "Pathway to English" for Senior High School Grade XII. The most dominant cognitive level among the 49 listening instructions based on the textbook is the C1 (Remembering) level. This aligns with the goals of foundational education, where mastering basic knowledge is crucial before students can progress to higher levels of understanding.
