Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of Sherine Abdel Wahab's songs, which are popular in Indonesia, using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, particularly at the denotative and connotative levels of meaning. The songs analyzed include El Watar El Hassas, Kalam Eineih, Bi Kelma Menak, Sabry Aalil, Hobbo Ganna, and Ala Bali. Using a descriptive-qualitative method and library research, the analysis results show that the lyrics represent various expressions of love, longing, emotional pain, and strong emotional hopes in romantic relationships. The denotative meaning in the songs is generally descriptive, while the connotative meaning forms an image of deep feelings and emotional conflicts characteristic of romantic relationships. This representation highlights the universal appeal of Sherine's songs to Indonesian society, particularly due to their ability to convey strong emotions through lyrical and musical means. The strength of Arabic song lyrics lies not only in the beauty of their language but also in the depth of meaning that can be accessed through a semiotic approach.
