Abstract
Speaking is a crucial skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, yet many junior high school students in Indonesia face difficulties in developing fluency due to limited opportunities for practice and monotonous learning media. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of BBC Learning English videos in improving the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at a junior high school in Cileunyi, East Bandung. Using a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design, 28 students from class 8A participated as research subjects. Data were collected through oral speaking tests assessed on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension based on Brown’s (2004) rubric. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ speaking performance, with the mean post-test score (78.32) notably higher than the pre-test score (66.07). A paired sample t-test indicated that this difference was statistically significant at the 0.05 level, confirming the positive impact of the treatment. The improvement was most evident in pronunciation and vocabulary, suggesting that exposure to authentic video materials enhanced students’ ability to produce accurate sounds and use a wider range of expressions. These findings indicate that integrating authentic multimedia resources such as BBC Learning English videos not only enhances linguistic competence but also increases student motivation and engagement in the learning process. This study highlights the potential of video-based learning as an effective pedagogical strategy for fostering communicative competence in EFL classrooms and recommends its wider implementation in similar educational contexts.
