Abstract

ENGLISH: This study aims to examine the socio-cultural changes of the Outer Baduy community due to modernization. The main focus of this study is to identify the forms of social change that occur and analyze how modernization affects the social structure, belief system, cultural values, and economic practices of the Outer Baduy community. Using Spradley's ethnographic method, this study applies participatory observation, interview, and documentation techniques to obtain comprehensive data. The theoretical framework used is based on William F. Ogburn's theory of social change, which distinguishes between material and non-material changes. The results of the study show that modernization brings complex multidimensional changes, indicating that infrastructure development, technological advances, and economic shifts are growing rapidly, while cultural values and customary identities experience much slower change In the midst of changing currents, the Outer Baduy community has not lost its way. They have not only survived, but have been smart in filtering external influences. Modernization is responded to not with absolute rejection, but through identity negotiation that allows them to remain steadfast in maintaining customs and beliefs. Traditions are not abandoned, but are maintained in new ways that are contextual and strategic. The tension between customs and modernity actually gives birth to a space for social creativity, where ancestral values are brought to life in adaptive forms. Thus, the Outer Baduy community shows that they are not victims of change, but rather active actors who are able to reshape their way of life without losing their cultural roots. This finding challenges the old assumption that indigenous communities are always left behind in modernization, and opens up a new perspective that tradition and change can go hand in hand in one breath. INDONESIA: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji perubahan sosial budaya masyarakat Baduy Luar akibat dari modernisasi. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk perubahan sosial yang terjadi serta menganalisis bagaimana modernisasi mempengaruhi struktur sosial, sistem kepercayaan, nilai budaya, dan praktik ekonomi masyarakat Baduy Luar. Dengan menggunakan metode etnografi ala Spradley, penelitian ini menerapkan teknik observasi partisipatif, wawancara, dan dokumentasi untuk memperoleh data yang komprehensif. Kerangka teoritis yang digunakan berlandaskan teori perubahan sosial William F. Ogburn, yang membedakan antara perubahan material dan non material. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa modernisasi membawa perubahan multidimensi yang kompleks, menunjukkan bahwa pembangunan infrastruktur, kemajuan teknologi, dan pergeseran ekonomi berkembang pesat, sementara nilai-nilai budaya dan identitas adat mengalami perubahan yang jauh lebih lambat. Di tengah perubahan arus, masyarakat Baduy Luar tidak kehilangan arah. Mereka tidak hanya bertahan, tetapi cerdas dalam menyaring pengaruh luar. Modernisasi direspons bukan dengan penolakan mutlak, melainkan melalui negosiasi identitas yang memungkinkan mereka tetap teguh menjaga adat dan kepercayaan. Tradisi tidak ditinggalkan, tetapi dijaga dengan cara-cara baru yang kontekstual dan strategis. Ketegangan antara adat dan modernitas justru melahirkan ruang kreativitas sosial, di mana nilai-nilai leluhur dihidupkan dalam bentuk yang adaptif. Dengan demikian, masyarakat Baduy Luar menunjukkan bahwa mereka bukanlah korban perubahan, melainkan aktor aktif yang mampu membentuk ulang cara hidupnya tanpa kehilangan akar budaya. Temuan ini menantang anggapan lama bahwa masyarakat adat selalu tertinggal dalam modernisasi, dan membuka cara pandang baru bahwa tradisi dan perubahan bisa berjalan seiring dalam satu tarikan napas.
