Abstract
This study aims to analyze the condolence expression strategies used by netizens in comments on TikTok regarding the death of Liam Payne, as well as the differences in expression between men and women using Searle's (1969) pragmatic theory and Tannen's (1990) genderlect theory. Using descriptive qualitative methods, comments were analyzed based on five categories of condolence strategies, as outlined by Elwood (2004): Expression of Sympathy, Acknowledgment of Death, Offer of Assistance, Future-Oriented Remarks, and Expression of Concern. The results showed that Expression of Sympathy was the most dominant strategy, followed by Expression of Concern and Future-Oriented Remarks. Although Tannen's theory suggests that men use report talk more, this study found that men also frequently use rapport talk, which focuses more on empathy and emotional connection, a style more commonly used by women. This study contributes to the understanding of gender differences in condolence expressions on social media, as well as the influence of digital platforms in facilitating more open and expressive emotional expressions.
