Abstract
In the teaching learning process, it is a must that students get good achievement. Grammar is one of crucial factor that should be reached by students well. Therefore, one of the ways to find out the teaching learning process in well, it is determined by the research of the portrait of teaching grammar. The purposes of this research are to find out the process of teaching grammar, especially teaching irregular verb and simple past tense process, and the correlation between them. This research is intended to know student's responses to the way of teacher teach them in the classroom, and especially to discover student's achievement in grammar. This research applied descriptive method, it is to find out the intense accuracy of the actual phenomena in the field and describe what the researcher observes in teaching grammar process. And then, the techniques of collecting data instruments which is used in this research are observation, questionnaire, interview and test. It is given to 48 students at grade eight of the SMP Pasundan Rancakek-Bandung as the sample. The result of the research is the teacher is high quality in giving grammar material, it is known by almost 98.52% of students get high score, but the teacher is low quality in teaching learning process in supporting her students for studying, it is improved by observations, questionnaires and interviews, such as; it is improved by 90% of students respond that they are ever given punishment but they are not ever given reward. Then, both of irregular verb and simple past tense, it has high correlation and its influence each other, it is improved by tests; first test shows that 98.52% of students understand how to construct simple past tense material, and third test shows that 98.89% students understand how to construct simple past tense sentence, after they are given irregular verb material first. In conclusion, the portrait of teaching grammar at grade eight of the SMP Pasundan Rancaekek-Bandung is described by the process of teaching grammar, the student's responses to the way of teacher teach them in the classroom, and the student's achievement in grammar, especially student's mastery of irregular verb influences toward student's mastery of simple past tense.
