Abstract

The paper entitles “Ambiguity in the Jakarta Post Weekender” discuses about ambiguous sentence as grammatical, and lexical. This ambiguity can happen in various situations, either spoken or written. Because of that, the researcher wants analysis kinds of ambiguity in magazine. In this paper, the researcher proposes two problems: 1) what kinds of ambiguity are there in The Jakarta Post Weekender? 2) What are effects of ambiguity into meaning of sentence in The Jakarta Post Weekender? The researcher uses data in cover column of The Jakarta Post Weekender which publish in June and July in 2012. The researcher uses Stephen Ullmanns theory (1977). The researcher also uses diagram theory by George Yule (2007) which helps the researcher in analyzing grammatical ambiguity. The data is collected through documentary method, observe, and take notes analyzed with using descriptive qualitative method. Then, the researcher analyzes data where is grammatical and lexical ambiguity. Furthermore, the researcher analyzing the effect ambiguity into sentence meaning based on form of ambiguity founded. The result show, there are 21 ambiguous sentences consist of four grammatical ambiguities and 17 lexical ambiguities. Whereas the effects of grammatical ambiguity are the meaning of sentence has more than one sentence meaning, each interpretation meanings of sentence are clear and logic and each interpretation meanings of sentence refer to different thing. Whereas the effects of lexical ambiguity are the meaning of sentence has more than one sentence meaning, each interpretation meanings of sentence are clear and logic and each interpretation meanings of sentence refer to same thing. As a conclusion, this research states that there are two forms of ambiguity in The Jakarta Post Weekender based on the research result above. So the effects of ambiguity into sentences meaning are gotten from the effects of grammatical and lexical ambiguity into sentences meaning.
