Abstract
A style shows the writer's personality or voice, but it also shows how she or he sees the audience of the writing. An English writing style is a way of using the English language. The style of a piece of writing is the way in which features of the language are used to convey the meaning. This research is carried out to describe students’ styles and to analyze the main of difficulties of students in English writing. It has been done at the first grade students of Public Senior High School (SMAN 1) Ciranjang. The research questions that is what the style of English writing employed by the first grade students at SMAN 1 Ciranjang, what the difficulties faced by students of the first grade at SMAN 1 Ciranjang in learning English writing, and What the ways to overcome students’ difficulties in English writing. This research uses several methodologies to find the answer from research questions. They are interview, observation, questionnaire and test. These methodologies are used to look for students’ styles and difficulties in learning English writing, and to find the solution of student’ difficulties in English writing. The population of this research is all SMAN 1 Ciranjang students which consist of 944 students and the sample is the first grade students at SMAN 1 Ciranjang, which consist of 30 students. Students’ styles in English writing can be categorized into three parts that is (1) sentence structure, (2) diction, (3) and tone. The findings show that 40% students use different sentence structure in making paragraph, 33.5% students use sentence structure s v c, 26.5% use sentence structure s v o. Then, the findings show also 100% students use popular diction, 23.4% students use colloquial diction, and 3.3% students use learned diction. The last, 100% students use informative tone. These are the result of styles of English writing. Then, the fact findings about students’ difficulties in English writing show that 50% students are difficult to implement the right grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary. The solution of students’ difficulties in English writing is more practices to write English. Moreover, it would be better for the next researcher look for the slang word because this research is not finding the slang word. The students are suggested to learn more about vocabulary because their words are popular, colloquial, and learned. It would be better if students have types of slang words. Also, it would be better for students to be able to use grammar such as tenses. They still find it difficult to apply the rule of grammar. The teachers also are suggested to help students to improve their English writing skill in order to be good writer in English writing.
